Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most important and widely celebrated festivals in India and several other countries. It is a festival of lights that symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali usually falls between October and November, depending on the lunar calendar.
During Diwali, people decorate their homes with oil lamps, candles, and colorful rangoli (decorative patterns made on the floor). The festival is associated with various mythological stories and legends in different regions of India. One of the most well-known stories behind Diwali is the return of Lord Rama, along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, to their kingdom Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana.
